At first when the engine light on my fathers 5 year old Subaru Legacy with less than 20,000 miles came on he didn't think much of it. I worked at a Subaru dealer for a short time and saw many customers in the service department with complaints of the engine light being on. It almost always amounted to very little, usually a gas cap or at worst an air sensor.
When he began noticing a substantial decrease in the engines power we had to remind ourselves "we are Crutcher's and things usually don't seem to work out quite that smoothly and easily for us". What might be a gas cap for someone else, could be something far more sinister for us, like a family of rodents such as chipmunks or squirrels living in our engine bay and eating our engine wires.
Obviously with a noticeable decrease in engine power, something much more serious must be going on. So he drops the Subaru off at a local Automobile repair shop and after a few hours the mechanic calls with the diagnosis. Upon opening the hood to view the engine the mechanic explains to us that the engine compartment is stuffed with acorns, acorn shells and if that's not enough, what looks like a squirrels nest.
Upon further examination, not only have these rodents been feasting on acorns and sleeping in the engine bay, these rodents have been feasting on the engines wiring system, ruining wires and a costly wiring harness. "This isn't the first time I've seen evidence of rodents like squirrels or chipmunks chewing on engine wires" says the mechanic. "It's quite common but rarely to this degree ".
The rodents chewed on the engine wires to the tasty tune of approximately $1,500 in parts and labor. To our amazement we're not alone, thousands of automobile owners are finding that they too are victims of tasty wires and have to replace costly engine wires.
After a little investigating, we believe we have the answer to why rodents are eating engine wires at an alarming rate. The reason rodents are attracted to and chewing on your engine wires is because automobile manufacturers have discovered another way to save money. Not only do soy products taste good but it's cheaper than traditional plastic. That's right! Many auto manufacturers are making the covering for engine wires from soy based products and squirrels, chipmunks and other rodents love the smell and taste of soy.
